Self adhesive sheets - a new way with adverts.

A new way of doing it

We've got used to using transfers as adverts on model buses. Here is an alternative using self adhesive paper.

Apart from when vehicles were individually sign written, real buses used paper posters. On a model the transfers invariably give a gloss finish, which the real thing would not have.

Sometimes the adverts on model buses are the wrong size, the wrong period, or we might simply wish to have some variety.

A range of easy to use posters is now available to enable you to do this.

Obviously if you have a rare model which you wish to retain in mint condition you won't want to change it, but if you wish to personalise your fleet, this is a way to do it. Using these adverts can mean that you can use cheaper more common models to enlarge your fleet, and bring some variety.

Hints and tips

Using an EFE RML and some of the new posters, I'll describe how it's done.

Sometimes adverts on model buses are larger than they should be. This isn't the case here, but the advert needs to be removed, so that it will not show through the new one.

I used T cut (from a car accessory shop) to remove the advert. This takes a few minutes using piece of kitchen towel, but it is easy to remove paint from the raised moulding lines, as you can see.

As an alternative I used nail varnish remover, which was easier, quicker and avoided the removal of paint.

Other brands of nail varnish remover are available! This one came from a well known high street chemist.

Use a sharp knife and ruler to cut out the posters. You need to cut just the adhesive layer, not the backing - practice on the edges to test the pressure required. A good cutting mat makes this easier.
Once cut the poster can be peeled up quite easily.

Lightly press one end of the poster in place. Ensure it is square to the model. If necessary it can be repositioned as long as you haven't pressed it too firmly.

The finished result.

Front and rear adverts are available as well. Note that the original EFE front advert (seen on the right) is a bit small - this is done to make factory fitting easier. The self adhesive advert (left) is larger like the real one and curves around the corner. This is even more noticeable on RT family vehicles.
Refer to photos of real vehicles. Poster positioning varied - look at the rear of RTWs, Cravens RTs, Park Royal DMSs, MCW DMSs.

Lower rear adverts are also available.
